Ol’ Blue Eyes

The Guardian ran a story about this photograph by Giacomo Brunelli a little while back. It’s unreal.

May have been blind.

It was about 10 in the morning when I took this photograph. The light was coming from behind me. There was a tree that protected the scene from direct sunlight, allowing me to take the picture with a beautiful diffused light. I didn’t use any kind of filter, nor did I have to do anything to the image the dark-room. I took eight or nine shots on black-and-white film, and I was just lucky the dog’s eyes were lit so well.

As it turns out, this wasn’t lightning in a bottle. His other work offers a similar unreality. Creepshow of wonder.

Silver Lining

New tradition. The onslaught of terrible news, certainly not a new trend but one into which I’m newly tuned, started to murder my morale. So Saturday will feature a unique weekend-review mission: to identify the bright side of the darker stories of the week. These are specific headliners that dragged me down with their revelations of dishonesty and general badness. The weather’s doing its summer dance, people are generally happier, and why should the news do its best to battle that? Answer: because the world is full of reckless, ignorant, and greedy people. But I’ll do what I can to tread the air above the din for at least one day of the week. Here we go.

Rebuttal.

China’s been big-dogging it today, embracing a rarely seen degree of diplomacy and collaboration.
The Financial Times ran a story about the success of Tim Geithner’s visit to China and a likely strengthening of the Yuan. The good news was qualified as being not good enough – the fiscal breakthrough won’t bolster the global economy, but China won’t be able to maintain its absurd domination of exports. Maybe. But it means Obama’s diplomacy and decision against implementing tariffs may have created a better playing field. Read the rest of this entry »
